We were each born to do great things, but to reach greatness we must meet our innermost needs. It is those needs that -when nurtured- will set the stage for the greatness you are meant to achieve. Fulfilling work feeds the soul and a healthy soul is not bound by limits. True fulfillment makes your dreams limitless.
Here are three reasons why your work is unfulfilling.
1. It’s not meeting your love language.
The five love languages are words of affirmation, acts of crevice, receiving gifts, quality time and physical touch. What do you want in return for work well done? Do you want a hug from a thankful customer, someone to tell you how proud they are of you or quality time with your peers at the weekly meeting you’ve yet to be invited to? When the results of your hard work don’t give you rewards that match up with your love language(s) it leaves you feeling unfulfilled.
2. It isn’t aligned with your passions.
What do you long to do? Are you a commercial contractor who secretly longs to be a painter? Are you a high school teacher who’s always wanted to be a chef? If your longing for your true passions is leaving you feeling lost then it’s time to answer the question “Can I be happy where I am, or will I always regret not following a different calling?”
3. It doesn’t fit your personality.
We all have the ability to adapt and grow. That’s the beauty of being human- the strength to challenge our comfort zones. No other creature on the planet does that. Yet, we’ve all been given a distinct personality that, if we let it, can benefit us more than hinder us. Your personality is your comfort zone’s baseline. Though we are constantly growing and evolving who we are, to truly love what we do, our work must fit our personalities. For instance, someone who makes friends with everyone they meet will likely never meet their full potential working in the back of an office filing paperwork. They need to be out front with the customers!
Have you ever made the bold decision to leave a career for a more fulfilling one? I’d love to hear your story!
