A show of hands… how many of you have thought to yourselves “Why didn’t I think of that?!” while watching Shark Tank? I sure have!
Or does that idea you’ve had rolling around in your head get sparked again as you listen to pitches from hopefuls vying for a deal.
Are you harboring an idea that you’re too afraid to tell someone about because they might steal it or worse–laugh at you?
It’s time my friend to explore ways of making your idea happen. No more letting your fear control you or the naysayers stop you.
“Where would I even start?” you ask? Here are some must-dos.
1. Protect Your Idea
If your idea hasn’t been patented then it’s time to do it! File a Provisional Patent through Legalzoom. They are kind, courteous, helpful and will be able to walk you through each step of the process. The provisional patent protects your idea for 12 months while you work on it. It’s a true story that Elisha Gray invented the first telephone, but Alexander Graham Bell got the recognition because he filed the patent first. (Kind of an important thing to do!)
2. Bring Your Idea To Life
The next thing you want to do (if you haven’t already) is create your product. Either physically create it or have it drawn. I think Legalzoom can help connect you with a professional illustrator as well.

3. Secure Your Platforms
Securing your platform is an essential part of your branding. If you don’t, someone else might. If you’re not planning on using a specific social platform, you need to secure it regardless. Buy your domain and create all social media accounts with your brand’s name.
4. Build Your Brand
Branding is the key to exposing your product to the right audience. Very rarely does someone walk into Shark Tank with a brand-less product.
5. Introduce It To The World
After you take all the legal steps necessary to protect your product, set up your platforms and create your brand, it’s time to introduce it to your soon-to-be customers.
GOOD LUCK! And don’t forget to fill out that Shark Tank Application!
