Taking time to smell the roses is such a cliché saying, but maybe only because we’ve forgotten its importance.
Each year we have thousands of minutes to make memorable; 525,600 to be exact. But so many of those are carelessly thrown away.
Time is such a precious commodity that if we were able to bottle it no one would be able to keep it on the shelves.
We put so much energy in to making the most of things. We save coupons to make our money stretch, we cook dinners that use up the last of the ground beef before it goes bad and we add water to the last of the shampoo, but so often we don’t make the most of our time.
It’s our most precious commodity! Yet it doesn’t get as much attention as our creative cooking.
The way we approach each day translates to how we value our minutes. Holding our breath for a minute makes it go by as slow as molasses pouring on a winter day. Waiting for someone to finish getting ready for a night out makes a minute feel like it’s in slow-motion. And when those homemade chocolate chip cookies need a minute to cool it feels like an eternity.
A minute here and a minute there without focus will be gone never to be recovered again, but when we take the time to make the most of each one we gain more than just 60 seconds of focus.
Now don’t get me wrong. I will be the first person to admit that being busy every minute of every day isn’t healthy, but being busy and being focused are two entirely different things.
We waste precious minutes being busy with things that (in the long run) are not important. This week on a Shark Tank rerun I was struck by the story a man told about his decision to get rid of everything in his life that was not helping him move forward with his goals. Very, very wise in my opinion. I need to do more of that!
Our precious time is slipping away. We still have plenty left to make the most of. So in order to meet tomorrow with focus we need to plan for it today. When the sun rises up and brings with it another day full of precious minutes we need to be ready to meet it.
Take the time to smell the roses. Sip a cup of coffee on the back porch or take a drive through the country.
Time is ticking by friends! I want you to get the most out of it.
Let’s see the value in each moment. Let’s spend our time wisely.
Tell me… how will you spend your time differently this week?
