I’m sure you’ve heard the clever saying “goals are dreams with a deadline”. Sometimes we view our goals as daydreams- giving them as much importance in our lives as a reoccurring thought. We’ve talked before about the importance or writing down your goals. Your life goals need more than just headspace… they need your devotion. While dreaming is a wonderful thing, without specific action your dreams will stay dreams and will never morph into reality.
Which brings us to #1.
1. Be Selective
Dreams and goals are two separate things and need to be treated as such. Don’t make a dream a goal unless it’s something you’ll regret not accomplishing.
2. Plot Your Course
What will it take to reach your goal? Simply writing it down on a piece of paper and pinning it to your office wall won’t get you where you want to go. You must be clear with yourself about what energy and devotion you will need to give to your goal. Map out a course!
3. Have A Deadline
Without a deadline your goal is just a dream. You must be in relentless pursuit of your goals- always pressing forward. Set a deadline!
Above all, your goals must be in alignment with your life’s purpose. Goals that do not align with the path you were meant to take are (essentially) someone else’s goals.
Take American Idol hopefuls for instance. Thousands of people show up each year to take their shot at the prize. Yet, each season it’s clear to us that some of the auditioners don’t have futures as singers. They’re reaching for dreams (goals) that aren’t theirs for the taking. They are devoting their energy to something that doesn’t align with the talents they were given. There are hopefuls in those audition lines who are meant to be teachers, leaders, caregivers, SEOs, entrepreneurs and world-changers, but their goals are not yet in alignment with those things.
Set goals that align with who you are meant to be and how you are meant to serve others. The world needs what YOU have to offer. Be selective in plotting your course and take action!
