The Many, Many Benefits of Less (Or No) Stress

It is likely that you may already know that a teeny bit of stress can actually be good for you. In the right amount, stress produces an adrenaline rush that powers you through a taxing day at work, enhances your workout and more. However if that amount gets too high, things can easily spiral out of control.

Cutting down your stress level in today’s technology-driven life, it is important that you maintain your overall health. Less or no stress helps in enhancing your mood, boosting immune functions, promoting longevity, thereby leading to a more productive and healthier life. Allowing stress to get to your nerves will make you vulnerable to a variety of illnesses ranging from common flu to severe heart diseases. Stress can exert a very strong impact on your overall well-being as it is brain’s natural response to various stimuli.

Most of us lead stressful lives and you are one of us, so if your life is stress-laden do not worry because I will show you how to manage it and more importantly share the endless list of benefits that are associated with low stress. Here is the list:

Weight Loss

According to a recent study by University College London it was confirmed that people who have chronic stress have a much greater chance of contracting metabolic syndrome, a medical condition that triggers obesity and hypertension. So reducing stress will promote your weight loss efforts.

Happiness

This is one of those ridiculously obvious benefits, but still can’t be overlooked. Stress will rob you of many things, and probably the most important among them is happiness. When you are under stress you don’t get excited about anything on television, you lose interest in meals and even find it hard to enjoy a cup of coffee. When you manage stress effectively you realize how happy your life can be.

Protection against Cancer

Stress interferes with and impairs our immune system and is held responsible by the medical experts for nearly everything ranging from common colds to cancer. The sooner you get it under control, the higher your chances of improving your immune system to its normal condition, which will help in protecting you from grave diseases like cancer.

Better Sleep

A stress-addled brain will not sleep because it is busy processing the influx of various stimuli. People who lead stressful lives have terrible sleep patterns, as their brain has to keep up with so many things at the same time. When you reduce your stress level using stress management techniques, you will enjoy a healthier and deeper sleep with few interruptions.

Longer Life

A research conducted by University of Florida stated that patients suffering from heart disease with lower level of mental stress have a lower likelihood of experiencing a decline in blood flow to their heart, which increases the risk of death three-fold. In other words, stress can be lethal.

Relief from Pain and Ache

Research has indicated that stress has the tendency of heightening suffering that result from illnesses and acute pain. If a person is in control of their stress level, an unpleasant feeling associated with an ache or pain may register as a 5 on a pain index that ranges from 1 to 10. But excess stress can cause this 5 to soar to 10, which in turn leads to more stress and greater misery.

Better Memory

People who are obsessed with studies pertaining to mental fitness and strength will love this! A plethora of studies have established time and again that those who have low stress levels and remain relaxed in tough situations tend to perform much better on memory tests and similar evaluations compared to those who are not able to control their stress levels.

Positive Psychological Effects

We have discussed the numerous negative physical effects of stress, but this is not where the story ends, stress can play a major role in making you susceptible to a slew of emotional and mental disorders. These include anxiety, depression, panic attacks and phobias.

Emotional stress makes it difficult for you to make quick decisions, stay focused, think positively or remember stuff. Stress can breed irritability, which triggers impatience and frustration, which in turn lead to anger, resentment, insecurity and conflicts. While the numerous negative physical effects of high stress levels can be overwhelming on their own, you should not take these psychological effects lightly as they can be debilitating. Keeping an optimal stress level will help you in steering clear of these negative psychological effects and will promote vitality and health.

Enhance Your Sex Life

Ever wondered why women tend to lose that loving feeling? Well, stress is again the culprit and men are not immune to this either. According to researchers at Kinsey Institute, stress zaps the libido of nearly 30% of all men. For most men, sex is a stress reliever, while for busy and stressful women a husband’s desire can be quite mentally and physically demanding. But you have the power to change this; by reducing stress you can reignite the sexual spark in your life.
