Here’s something we don’t talk about every day- what people will say at our funerals. We don’t want to think about the day we’re no longer here, but it’s inevitable. There will be a day when we’re no longer physically present and people will be talking about us in the past-tense. What will they say?
The Bible tells us that a good name is better than great riches and being thought of as loving is better than silver and gold.
I couldn’t agree more, because after the money is spent and the worldly treasures are gone, your legacy is all that remains.
Are you living a life you want your great-grandchildren to hear about? Are you someone whose kindness won’t be forgotten? Will people remember you fondly?
On my daddy’s headstone I had engraved, the words, Remembering Christ In You. Those words are such a beautiful reminder of who my daddy was. He had such reverence for the Lord and that’s something that he would want people to remember about him. He is remembered fondly.
A legacy is a memory that has a profound impact on the lives of others. So, how do we leave a lasting legacy that is spoken about at our funeral and beyond?
By living a life full of the following qualities.
- A Generous Spirit
Maya Angelou is remembered for now famously saying “I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” Generosity comes in many forms. When we give of our time, our love and our kindness, when people need us most, they will never forget how our generosity made them feel.
- Be Resilient
Think of all the people who have left lasting legacies. We see all of them as resilient. If they had ever let life get the best of them their legacies wouldn’t exist. They are remembered because they were resilient.
- Do Everything with Purpose
Let there be a purpose to all that you do. Having a passion for life and a sincere purpose will be a bright shining light for others. When people see that you value purpose they will be inspired to do the same.
- Do Everything with Integrity
In all you do, do it with integrity. By following the golden rule you’re living by example. People will admire you for living a moral life whether they express their admiration or not. People who live with integrity are trusted and respected.
Live your best life today. Think about how you want to be remembered by those you love.
