When Confronted, Your Reactions Matter

August 17, 2015 By Lynn Bryson Leave a Comment

We are regularly confronted with rudeness, harshness, sarcasm and aggression. Whether we come face to face with any of these, or we’re subject to them via emails, messaging or social media, they still greatly affect our lives.

When negativity imposes itself on our lives it is attacking our inner serenity. Confrontations of rudeness, harshness, sarcasm and aggression leave a lasting effect. A single moment can dampen your day, alter your week or have such an impact that it drastically change your life.

Coming in contact with people who express these negative emotions on a regular basis can lead to festering inside of ourselves that shows up as self-hate, hatred towards others, a lack of self-worth, depression and anxiety. Yes, your environment can lead to mental illnesses- however temporary or chronic they might be.

When you’re confronted by people in your life who attack you with such anger, you must know where your value lies. No matter how your attacker sees you, remember, your value lies in the person you are at your core. And confrontation can only reach as deep as you let it.

Not only do you matter, you also owe it to yourself to be armed. Arming yourself doesn’t mean having equally offensive words locked and loaded. The Bible says this… “A soft answer calms the spirit but harsh words stir up anger.”

This is the part we can play in seeing that our soul lives in peace and other souls do as well.

Some people wake up in the mornings ready for a fight. But, that doesn’t have to be you or me. We can be the people who react in ways that calm the spirit. Kindness is inside of all of us. We just have to give it the attention it needs to expand and grow.

You are no less protecting yourself when you react in kindness. In confrontation, your reactions matter.

The bottom line is that you reap what you sow. What you give comes back to you. If you offer kindness as a reaction to others you will receive kindness. Offer rudeness and, well, you know.

Speak with a calm spirit. A heart of peace gives life to the body.
