Happiness, like anything else in life worth having, takes work. “But shouldn’t you just BE happy?” you ask.
Yes, happiness is about “just being happy.” Well… to a point.
It’s true that if you’ll simply make space for happiness that it will find its way into your life, but making that space is where the work comes in.
We fill our lives with nice (and not so nice) things. Do you spend time with people you love or do you spend it with people you don’t really care for? Does your home reflect who you are or is it full of lack luster furniture? Do you care for yourself or do you not feel the need?
What we do, who we spend our time with and what we allow into our homes has a lot to do with our happiness. Fixing one negative, but not others may get you slightly closer to your happiness goal, but without all the pieces of the puzzle you’ll be hanging onto happiness by a thread.
It’s time you feed into joy mentally, emotionally and spiritually.
What bounces around in your brain on a daily basis feeds every thought you have. Do you fear not having enough money to pay bills? Do you worry about your children? Are you always thinking about how much you hate your job? All of these things are floating around in your mind polluting every other thought you have. Even the good ones.
To stop this pollution you have to learn to keep these thoughts at bay. Worrying about the same things all day every day doesn’t change their outcome. In fact, it makes them bigger and more daunting.
To do this you need to create time and space for joy. Each day, spend time doing something that brings you joy. Go for a bike ride, play with your dogs, paint, knit, read a book. Do all or any of these things minus distractions. Minus all devices and connections to negativity. Without making space, you won’t be inviting happiness into your life. You’ll be pushing it away.
You CAN be happy. But you have to choose to give the pursuit of it the time required.
What is one thing you can do today to “feed your happiness”? We’d love to know. Share with us in the comments below.
